Менья - один из так называемых "late bloomer", которых по молодости не видно и не слышно, а потом вдруг оказывается, что они умеют играть в хоккей. Такие часто появляются из студенческих лиг. Кто-то теряется, сразу или через время, а кто-то слёту добывает себе место в НХЛ и уже никому его не отдаёт (например, Tyler Bozak из Торонто). При этом они не задрафтованы, и проявляются сразу как UFA. Менья после окончания школы несколько лет играл в USHL, а в прошлом сезоне выступал за университет Небраски в WCHA и вошел в число лучших новичков лиги по итогам сезона (WCHA All-Rookie Team). После этого он принял участие в летнем лагере Питтсбурга и сразу получил контракт. В АХЛ он сразу заиграл очень хорошо, и теперь вот будет претендовать уже на место в основе.
В недавнем обзоре Дейв Молинари включил его в десятку лучших проспектов клуба. Вот относящийся к нему фрагмент:

Unfortunately, between the end of the preseason and the start of the regular season, he sustained a high-ankle sprain. He plays the way we want to play. He plays with great pace, attacks the net once he gets into the offensive zone. As with most young players, he has to continue to work on [his play in] the defensive zone. You've seen it with our superstar players, just with faceoffs and everything, a player like Sid [Crosby] or Jordan Staal gets better on faceoffs with age. That's something Jason will have to continue to work on, his faceoffs and defensive zone positioning."
