Source: Kris Letang dealing with pressing nerve
[Daley expected to play this week]
[Concern emerging on Malkin?]
Mike Sullivan expressing confidence last Wednesday that Kris Letang would play for the start of the playoffs might have just been coach talk at this time of the year.
Today Sullivan said everyone is status quo.
“Where they stand is status quo,” Sullivan said. “Obviously the guys that are joining the team in practice, that’s a step closer to game action. Everything at this point is status quo until we tell you otherwise. That’s where it’s at.”
Letang has had no significant setback with his back injury but there’s also been no progress at all. No one involved has an idea when he’ll return or if the injury will hold up if he can return at some point.
Per a source close to the situation, Letang has a herniated disk in his back that may or may not need surgery at some point. The injury is pressing on a nerve and when diagnosed with the injury in late February, the option Letang and the team planned to take was therapy for four weeks and see where things stand at the end of March.
Two weeks ago the Penguins believed Letang was making progress and that he would have been practicing with the team by last week, but as back injuries are always complicated and tricky, things are at a stand still where Letang has good and bad days per a source.
Letang after skating for about two weeks, has now been off the ice for multiple days and again today did not take part in the pre-morning skate workout that other injured plays did this morning. Olli Maatta and Evgeni Malkin among the two who did and are still not practicing with the full team.
An interesting development out of today’s morning skate is Trevor Daley now appears be ahead of Olli Maatta in getting back into the lineup.
Daley took part in the morning skate wearing a yellow non-contact jersey. There is optimism among the coaches Daley will be cleared to potentially dress for the season finale, if not sooner. It hasn’t been ruled out that he gets two games in if things go well the next two days.
Last week Sullivan seemed to hint Daley was a bit behind Maaatta in his recovery but that has changed.
As for Evgeni Malkin, he won’t play again tonight and his absence has now reached the point where it’s a lot longer than the Penguins ever imagined. Still, there’s no concern (YET) in the organization he won’t be ready for the playoffs and could still return for a regular season game.
